Rene Descartes, that French genius of the 17th century, showed how geometry and algebra can be joined together. The key to this is Cartesian plane, which allows us to assign to each point in the plane a unique pair of reals that gives its location. In this chapter, we learn how to build the Cartesian plane, and with that done we establish various links between algebraic expressions and geometrical objects.
